Falkland Islands: Cancellation of the visit of Cruise Vessel Start Princess

Due to a reported outbreak of norovirus on the cruise vessel Star Princess, following agreed protocols, the Chief Medical Officer took the difficult decision not to allow the vessel to land in the Falkland Islands as scheduled. The vessel had been due to arrive in Stanley at 8am on the 14th January

The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley were informed of the problem on the afternoon of the 13th of January, and communicated the decision that evening following consultation with both the ship’s doctor and a consultant microbiologist in the UK.

This difficult decision was not been taken lightly, and was made in the wider interests of the public and tourism industry. Norovirus is highly infectious, and causes potentially severe sickness and diarrhoea. It is spread easily by direct contact, touching contaminated surfaces, and through inhalation. The virus has become a serious issue in hospitals and vessels around the world and can be very serious in the elderly and the very young. An outbreak in the Falkland Islands would put enormous pressure on our limited medical resources, and jeopardise other scheduled cruise visits.

The Falkland Islands Government wish those affected a speedy recovery and an enjoyable onward journey, and hope to be able to welcome you to our beautiful home and country in the future.

This is only the second occasion that a tour vessel has ever had to be turned away from the Falkland Islands, with over 100 cruise visits welcomed every year.

In consultation with the cruise operator and local agent, a post-­incident review is to take place.

Latin America focused on trade and development, not the Falklands, says Hague

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said that it is important to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Falkland Islands conflict, but aside from some sabre rattling from Argentina, the rest of Latin America is interested in trade and development.

“The Falklands are well protected and will always remain so”, said the Foreign Secretary (Photo EPA)

“What they are interested in is expanding trade, and building up their economies for the huge numbers of people in their countries who want opportunity. Brazil is very focused, for instance, on improving educational links with the UK”, said Hague.

“These are the sort of thing they are interested in, not the Falkland Islands” underlined the Foreign Secretary who this week is scheduled to visit Brazil, the first in six years.

And although there are no plans to upgrade the defence of the Islands to coincide with the anniversary, “the Falkland Islands are well protected, in any case. And they will always remain so”.

Hague pointed out that the recently refurbished airport (MPA) in the Falkland Islands does mean, “of course, that the Falkland Islands can be heavily reinforced at short notice, which was not the case at the time of the war in 1982.”

Although admitting that across Latin America there will be quite a few differences of opinion with the UK over the Falkland Islands, “I don’t get the sense that those countries other than Argentina want to press that”.

The Duke of Cambridge’s posting to the Falklands next month, where he will spend six weeks working as a search and rescue pilot, has raised objections in Buenos Aires, with the Argentine official with responsibility for the South Atlantic territory calling it “a provocative act”.

But Foreign Secretary Hague firmly rejects accusations of provocation.

“This is a normal part of the duties of His Royal Highness,” he says. “This is what he does, this is his job. And it is part of the normal duties within the armed forces – to serve in the Falkland Islands”.

Therefore “I see no reason why we should feel that he shouldn’t take part in his normal duties in one of our overseas territories”.

Cameron accuses Argentina of ‘colonialism’ and reiterates protection of Falklands

British Prime Minister David Cameron has accused Argentina of “colonialism” over the country's claim to the Falkland Islands. Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions in the Commons, Cameron vowed to protect the Islands' population and allow them to decide their own future.

The British PM revealed that the National Security Council held a meeting devoted to the South Atlantic situation

“What the Argentines have been saying recently, I would argue, is far more like colonialism because these people want to remain British and the Argentines want them to do something else”, said PM Cameron.

Argentina's government has been ramping up its rhetoric over the territories in recent months as the 30th anniversary of the 1982 Falklands conflict approaches.

The Prime Minister was speaking 24 hours after the National Security Council (NSC) held a meeting devoted entirely to the situation in the South Atlantic territories which are disputed by Argentina.

Cameron told Parliament he called the summit so he could make sure defences and everything else is “in order“.

”I'm determined we should make sure that our defences and everything else is in order, which is why the National Security Council discussed this issue yesterday.“

Further on Cameron added: ”It's very important we commemorate the Falklands conflict in this year, the 30th anniversary, and we remember all those who served and who fought so hard and those who gave their lives and didn't come home.

“The absolutely vital point is that we are clear that the future of the Falkland Islands is a matter for the people themselves. As long as they want to remain part of the United Kingdom and be British, they should be able to do so.”

Tory MP Andrew Rosindell branded Argentina's actions “wholly deplorable” and urged PM Cameron to “remind Argentina they lost the Falklands War and that it's up to the Falklanders to determine their own future”.

On December 21 last year Mercosur, which includes Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay, announced that it would bar ships sailing under the Falkland Islands flag from docking at their ports. But earlier this month, HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's ice patrol vessel currently on a scientific mission to the South Atlantic, called at Montevideo, Uruguay, en route to the Falklands

Hague arrives in Brazil for two-day visit to launch a ‘strategic dialogue’

Foreign Secretary William Hague begins Wednesday a two-day visit to Brazil which according to Brazilian sources will mark the beginning of a strategic dialogue between the two countries

It’s the first visit of a Foreign Secretary to Brazil in six years

In Brasilia Hague will meet with his peer Antonio Patriota, with Defence minister Celso Amorim and in Rio do Janeiro with Governor Sergio Cabral and the Commander of the Brazilian Navy, Admiral Julio Soares Moura Neto.

This is the first visit to Brazil in six years of a Foreign Secretary and is seen as a turning point for British withdrawal from Latin America.

“Now I think it is universally understood across the capitals of the region that Britain is expanding. Britain is coming back”, said Hague in a Sunday interview who described Brazil as “one of the emerging powers of the world”.

Disarmament and non-proliferation, the UN Security Council, the Middle East and North Africa, human rights, hunger and poverty eradication, and sustainable development are some of the topics on the agenda for the talks, said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a communiqué.

Patriota and Hague will also talk about improving links in such areas as energy, education, technology and development, as well as bilateral cooperation in the organization of mega sports events.

The press release says that there is a potential to expand bilateral collaboration, like the program Science without Borders, which is aimed at financing scholarships for more than 100,000 Brazilian youths at the best universities in the world, including reinforced involvement by the private sector.

The Foreign Ministers will also address global affairs, such as the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the international financial crisis and the reform of political and economic governance institutions.

Promoting trade and investments are also included in the agenda. Bilateral trade in 2011 totalled 8.57 billion dollars, up 10.21% over 2010. Brazilian exports to the UK increased 12.4%, reaching 5.2 billion.

In the last ten years, the stock of British investments in Brazil rose by 8.4 billion dollars, making the United Kingdom the 6th largest investor in the country.

Colonialismo e Falklands-Malvinas Londra accusa Buenos Aires di colonialismo, Brasile e Uruguay chiudono i loro porti alle navi britanniche

Hanno destato molto scalpore questa settimana in Argentina le dichiarazioni del premier britannico Cameron sulle isole Falklands-Malvinas. Cameron ha accusato il governo di Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner di portare avanti una politica colonialista rispetto all'arcipelago conquistato nel 1833 dalle truppe britanniche, ma da sempre rivendicato da Buenos Aires.

Cameron si è detto particolarmente preoccupato per le posizioni prese dagli altri paesi del Mercosud, Uruguay e Brasile, che hanno deciso di negare l'accesso ai loro porti alle navi britanniche dirette verso le isole. Una decisione presa in solidarietà e appoggio alle rivendicazioni argentine, più volte avallate dagli organismi regionali come l'Unasur, la Oea e, appunto, il Mercosud. E' una polemica infinita, l'Argentina ha commesso l'imperdonabile errore di voler recuperare l'arcipelago con la via militare, fu la manovra sbagliata e grottesca della dittatura, che mandò a morire circa novecento soldati, per lo più militari di levi senza esperienza, mal addestrati e abbandonati al loro destino.

Dal ritorno alla democrazia in poi si è tentata la via diplomatica, ma Londra non ha mai accettato di discutere la sovranità delle isole, dove oggi è ancora attiva una delle più grosse basi militari britanniche nel mondo. Fino all'accusa, che appare alquanto grottesca se si guarda alla storia degli ultimi tre secoli, di colonialismo ai danni degli argentini. Cameron da una parte, la Kirchner e gli alleati sudamericani dall'altra, nel mezzo i kelpers, gli abitanti delle Falklands - Malvinas, che non si sentono affatto argentini, ma che por molto tempo sono stati abbandonati da Londra.  Oggi le isole vivono di pesca, di turismo, della base militare (duemila soldati, anche se la crisi economica rischia di ridimensionarne  le attività) e del miraggio del petrolio da cercare nelle acque gelate dell'Atlantico Sud. Sono lontane dai centri di potere, dominate dal vento e dalla distanza enorme rispetto alle parole grosse della politica e della diplomazia.   LA MIA OPINIONE "A CALDO":
Errore non considerare le ultimi sviluppi delle relazioni di concordia con il Brasile.Quindi sudamerica non è ormai un blocco omogeneo antagonico.
Le tensioni non iniziano con le dichiarazioni di Cameron.E l'accusa di Colonialismo non è afatto grotesca per i motivi che ho espresso sopra.(Anche l'Uruguay,non che Paraguay e Bolivia si lamentano da sempre di subire un tratto Colonialista da parte dell'Argentina:"ci considerano una sua provincia".E questo sentimento si trascina dall'epoca della conquista  Borbonica.
Un errore minimizzare il conflitto:in tempi di Telecomunicazion dire che nel villagio globale essistono zone lontani dai centri di potere sembra uno sproposito.Le distanza caso mai non hanno impedito alla Tacher di fare la Guerra qunado nessuno ci credeva fino all'ultimo minuto,compresa l'Italia.E la distanza non ha impedito Giovanni Paolo II recarsi nel posto per due volte.E piu vicino nel tempo la distanza non ha impedito alla Clinton recarsi in Argentina a dare l'appoggio splicito all'apertura di conversazioni fra i due paesi.
E questa attitudine prescindente è piu grave se si considera che l'Argentina è il paesi "piu Italiano" al mondo dopo l'Italia:infatti la popolazione di origine Italiano e di migrazione Italiana è la maggioritaria in quel paese.Stessa attitudine ha avuto il Governo Berlusconi al riguardo del conflitto con la Lybia:Frattini gridava al non intervezionismo delle grande potenze e Berluconi giurava amicizzia eterna e non guerra a Kadafy.Poi è andata a finire come è finita  e l'italia ne meno ringraziata dalle potenze intervinenti.L'Italia sia sensibile alla fortuna delle vicende dei suoi connazionali all'estero,se non altro.Internet è i mezzi per nulla fanno di questa una zona "lontana".Tanto è cosi che forse questa nota di La Stampa non sarebbe essistita senza il lavoro della rete,da qui queste pagine sono un essempio.
